The return of Amersham Horses

You may or may not be aware of the recent court ruling which has decreed that 29 of the equines rescued from Spindles Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, must be returned to the Gray family, four members of which are awaiting trial on offences under the Animal Welfare Act (2006).  A further 82 horses must be removed from the sanctuaries where they are currently housed, to be sold at public auction on May 3rd.

Obviously this ruling defies any logic and, while it will be hard to overturn, we are asking you to do what you can.  To this end can you please take a couple of minutes to add your name to the online petition which has been organised by the National Equine Welfare Council  Click here to sign the petition

The British Horse Society has expressed its outrage at the decision to return 29 donkeys and Shetland ponies to the family at the centre of the recent rescue operation at Spindles Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.  Read more......

Major Breakthrough is announced in Battle Against Strangles

A new diagnostic blood test has been developed to combat the virulent horse disease Strangles.

The breakthrough has come after four years of research by scientists at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket.

The development of the test is part of the campaign ‘Breaking the Strangles Hold’, launched by the Animal Health Trust and The British Horse Society in February last year by the AHT’s President HRH The Princess Royal.

It has two main aims: to raise awareness among owners, riders and anyone involved in the health and welfare of horses, and to generate funds to support the vital research in the ongoing battle to eradicate the disease.

The blood test identifies horses that have recently been exposed to Strangles, enabling it to be nipped in the bud.

Oliver Wilson, campaign director at The British Horse Society, said: "It is fantastic news.  This big breakthrough is a real boon to horse owners and I believe will lead to a significant drop in Strangles outbreaks. But there is still much to be done.

"The AHT's work to develop and test a fully effective vaccine against Strangles is ongoing.  To support it we need to raise another £120,000 by the end of this year to reach the campaign target of £250,000."

The Horse Trust's Chief Executive Brigadier Paul Jepson said: “We are delighted our funding for this project has been so fruitful. This represents major progress in our battle to reduce the suffering caused by this common and debilitating disease.”

Peter Webbon, Chief Executive of the Animal Health Trust, said: “Our research scientists have a particular interest in the diagnosis and prevention of Strangles and the development of this diagnostic test is a major milestone. Huge thanks go to all of those who have supported the campaign.”

Strangles is the most commonly diagnosed infectious horse disease around the world. It can prove fatal. Clinical signs include fever, profuse nasal discharge and abscessed lymph nodes of the head and neck. The swelling of these lymph nodes may, in severe cases, restrict the airway, hence the name ‘Strangles’.

The blood test is ideal for screening horses prior to movement, competition or sales and will be available from 1 March this year.

The next big step is to produce a new effective vaccine, which would be a major breakthrough in protecting horses and ponies around the world.

The campaign needs public support. Ways to help include making a donation, holding a fundraising event, keeping a collection box or buying a ‘Breaking the Strangles Hold’ polo shirt.

Clothing brand Puffa has teamed up with the campaign and produced a range of polo shirts to help raise funds (www.puffa.com). The campaign is also being supported by Horse & Hound magazine.

Further details of the Animal Health Trust’s work can be found at www.aht.org.uk.

For more information about the Strangles campaign, visit www.strangles.org

Equestrian Forum calls for increased access now!

Members of the Equestrian Access Forum have presented Jonathan Shaw, Minister for the Horse Industry, with a petition calling for increased equestrian access.

Graham Cory, Chairman of the Equestrian Access Forum, and Forum members Caroline Clayden, Catriona Cook and Mark Weston handed over the petition which is signed by more than 23,000 concerned equestrians

The petition stated: "More opportunities for off-road horse riding and driving are needed now. We ask the Government to deliver a comprehensive network of off-road horse riding and driving routes now."

Mr Weston, the BHS's Director of Access, Safety and Welfare, said: “This petition demonstrates the groundswell of support from grass-roots riders who are concerned at the lack of provision for equestrians in our Rights of Way Network.

“Government and Local Authorities must think about and provide for the needs of equestrians in the same way as they do walkers and cyclists.’

Horse lovers encouraged to join the BHS Ride for Access

The British Horse Society is encouraging riders and carriage drivers throughout the UK to hold a BHS ‘Ride for Access’ to raise money for the Access Fighting Fund.

Ride organisers can get a Ride For Access pack by contacting The British Horse Society headquarters - enabling them to publicise their event, raise funds and invite others to join in.

The Access Fighting Fund was set up in 2007, after a fight to save a bridleway in Oxfordshire left the BHS with a bill for £30,000 costs.

BHS Director of Access, Safety and Welfare Mark Weston, said: “Horse riders only have access to 22 percent of the public rights of way network, while carriage drivers only have access to five percent.

“It is therefore imperative that we have the necessary funds to protect these rights of way, especially as these cases more often than not need to be defended either at court or at public inquiry.”

Henry Whittaker, BHS Access Senior Executive, said: “Organising a Ride For Access is a fun, sociable way of raising funds for the BHS, and getting together with other riders in your area.”

The British Horse Society’s Access Week (16-26 May), when BHS staff, volunteers and members hold events to raise awareness of equestrian access issues, will be used as the focus for these rides. However, they can be organised at any time during the year to raise funds for the Fighting Fund.

For further information, or to obtain a Ride for Access pack, please contact: Hannah Brown, Access Executive, The British Horse Society on 01926 707813 or h.brown@bhs.org.uk

Access new information at bhs.org.uk

The British Horse Society’s Access Department has released revised advisory leaflets. The information is available free at the BHS website, www.bhs.org.uk

The leaflets have been produced as part of an ongoing campaign to update the Access Department’s literature, providing information for rights of way officers, new or experienced riders and landowners on aspects of good practice.

    · Standards and Dimensions gives details of good practice in constructing and maintaining equestrian paths, for the rights of way professional or interested rider.

    · Finding Bridleways is useful for new riders who would like to try riding out, and for riders who move into a new area.

    · Clearing Rights of Way provides practical guidance to anyone wishing to hold a clearing party.

    · Stallions on Bridleways provides advice for riders and keepers of animals on how best to avoid problems when keeping stallions near to equestrian rights of way.

    · Riding on Beaches and Riding on Estuaries both provide lists of available riding.

New information has also been produced on how to start a bridleways group, and affiliating it to the BHS.

BHS Director of Access, Safety and Welfare, Mark Weston, said: “The production of these revised leaflets is part of our ongoing work to inform riders, land managers and anyone involved with rights of way on how best to deal with issues surrounding equestrianism”.

Other advisory leaflets are also free to download at http://www.bhs.org.uk/Content/Acs-ORR.asp

For more information, please contact: Hannah Brown, BHS Executive Access and Publications, on 01926 707813 h.brown@bhs.org.uk or Pat Regan, BHS Administrator Access on 01926 707712  access@bhs.org.uk

More saddlery thefts in Shropshire. I have just received the following email:

"I live in Shropshire near Roddington and last night £15,000 of tack around 12 Saddles and 20 Bridles were Stolen from our yard. The police also informed us that another 3 yards were broken into with a 5 mile radius from us on the same night. This is a recent issue in Shropshire with organised crime. Please can you ask people to be extra careful as these people seem to check out an area and make there way by foot to your premises proceed to rob you and walk away. Its not just the issue of the tack being stolen but it is hard to get the right tack for horse and rider and this is the most distressing."

The British Horse Society bites back at dog attacks

The British Horse Society's Access and Safety departments have received a number of reports of poorly controlled dogs interacting negatively with horses, and would like to gather more information regarding the scale of this problem.

Director of Access Safety and Welfare, Mark Weston, said: "We would encourage anyone who has suffered as the result of a dog attack to fill in the form on our website, so that we can gauge how widespread this problem is."
