Sam Barr has died aged 90

Sam Barr, together with his wife Linda, bred horses at their Limbury Stud in Hartpury, Gloucestershire. The horses had the very well known prefix ‘Welton’ and 20 of the Welton horses went on to event at 4 star level under such riders as Ginny Elliot, Mark Todd, Blyth Tait & Lucy Thompson! Sam himself rode Welton Friday round Burghley 4* event when he was 64 years young. The stallion Welton Gameful was the first in the line of Welton horses and Tricia Gardiner FBHS (Dressage expert on our Ask the Expert page) evented him to advanced level. I was lucky enough to jump Welton Louis during my BHSI exam. He gave me such confidence that I was popping 4ft for fun and feeling like we’d been a partnership for years, not just 20 minutes. He was evented by Pammy Hutton.

Sam was awarded the BEF Medal of Honour in recognition of his contribution to the equestrian world.
His funeral will take place at 2pm on Tuesday May 10th at Hartpury Church and then back at the family’s farm. Linda Barr would like everyone to know that they are welcome.
