Hartpury concludes

The NAF International Hartpury Horse Trials concluded yesterday with the show jumping phase of the CCI 1* and 2* competitions.

Helen West with Foxdon Sunny Jim

Helen West, pictured left and below, from Newton Abbott, Devon, was the winner following her clear round on Foxdon Sunny Jim who finished on his dressage score of 45. The overnight leader Danielle Dunn  and V Zermie 51  had the disappointment of having 2 poles down and dropped to 13th place.

The scores were so close in the 1* that there were under 11 penalties dividing the winner from 26th placed Herefordshire rider Holly Bradshaw and a further 1.90 penalties to Christine Hardinge in 32nd, both having jumped clear show jumping rounds to finish on their dressage scores in this strong competition with 93 starters.  Worcestershire’s Emily Johnson was pleased with Cult Appeal’s performance at Hartpury. They finished up on 69.80 after having 2 down SJ. It was lovely also, to see the late Di Lee’s daughter Jess, who spent her early years living in Herefordshire, completing at Hartpury with her little horse Squiffy Jiffy who is like a bouncy rubber ball.  His enthusiasm in the show jumping resulted in 2 fences down which dropped Jess from 24th to 45th.

Tom Rowland from Gloucestershire was in the money with 8th place on ‘The Carnival Cavalier’. It was good to see him back on board after his fall on Saturday, following the collision with a land rover on his 2* horse.

The 2* section with 66 starters, was won by Gloucestershire based Italian rider Vittoria Panizzon on the super Borough Pennyz who led from start to finish. Their score of  37 gave her a 3.4 point margin over 2nd placed Lucinda Fredericks riding The Navigator.

Franky Reid-Warrilow gives a thumbs up after her good XC round on Dolley Whisper

Powys’s Franky Reid-Warrilow riding Dolley Whisper added just 0.4 of a time penalty XC to her dressage score to finish in 12th place with 53.70.  A great result for Franky who broke her hip (which had to be pinned with rods) just 7 weeks ago!

Shropshire’s Sophie Wragg sadly had to withdraw Sandy City before the show jumping which must have been very disappointing following her good XC.
