EMW-UK and EMW-Sanctuaries began in a modest way 30 years ago when two like-minded women, myself, Elaine Tasker and, co-founder and good friend, Soibhan Lord, decided there was a need to monitor auctions and markets and report back to the public on what happened at these venues.
In those days there was scant regard for the welfare laws and minimum standards applied. Nowadays the big auction houses are much more on the side of the animals they vend and they all have set regulations to which they must adhere. One of the best equine auctioneers in the UK is our ‘local’ BRIGHTWELLS, who are very ‘hot’ on the regulations and who go above and beyond to provide superb selling conditions for equines forwarded by them. Over the years the network of auctions covered by EMW volunteers has expanded to cover the length and breadth of the UK and, as a direct result, likewise the size of the sanctuaries.
The Sanctuary side of EMW grew from the ‘over-spill’ of valueless pony foals, the barren brood mares and the no longer loved, aged riding ponies loading by the 100’s onto meat wagons. Both sanctuaries took what we could find room for and gave the young a chance of life, the old and weary a place to live out their days in peace. Nowadays equines are referred to us from across the UK and our waiting list for those needing a place grows ever longer. Likewise the list for horses and ponies required by kind, safe, and approved homes also grows daily.
EMW-Sanctuaries are proud to be assisted by and associated with Caroline Ingraham (re-known Aromatherapist), John Jones (Horse Listener) and Jan and Keira Fraser (Behavoirists and Aromatherapists), Caroline Austen (Shiatsu), Jane Jackson (fundraising officer), Laura Middlemiss (Transport and Home Check Officer) and Carol Howard (Transport). There are also in excess of 20 volunteers around the UK who do stirling work at auctions and markets and fundraising.
There are now two permanent EMW sanctuaries, at Bromyard and at Talgarth, Powys.
EMW-Herefordshire (Bromyard) at Lodore Farm, takes in the old, those with no place to go, and those who are ill, but also takes emergency overflow from the Wales sanctuary. It is owned by Bryan and Ann Weaver who support EMW Sanctuaries, and is run by Elaine Tasker and volunteers. Lodore Farm is set in beautiful countryside and is a restful, healing place where those who have suffered trauma and neglect can find peace, excellent grazing on our spotlessly clean meadows and friendship with our permanent residents. Currently we have 11 resident equines but also with many more out on long-term loan. EMW-Herefordshire is keen to hear from anyone who might like to lend a hand for an hour so each morning or evening. This may suit someone who is an active retired. We also have copious amounts of well-rotted manure available for keen gardeners who are happy to ‘dig-it-yourself’
EMW-Wales (Talgarth) is our remedial and rehab centre and is run by Soibhan Lord, and volunteers, with the aim of re-homing as many as possible of the intake. It currently has 12 equines in (and many more out on loan) but numbers changes throughout the year. EMW-Wales (Talgarth) also takes in many of the pathetic £10-00 a head foals from fairs and markets.
Our sanctuaries are open to visitors all year round but please phone 07870860825 prior to a visit so we can arrange for someone to introduce you to our resident equines. In the winter you will need to wrap up warm and wear wellies!
There are many sanctuaries EMW link with across the UK and, during February 2005, EMW Sanctuaries became part of a steering party for the newly founded BRITISH ANIMAL SANCTUARY PARTNERSHIP. This body has been created to link the 100’s of small sanctuaries across the UK, allowing us to liaise with and support each other, to set up a standard of care that sanctuary members must adhere to and to give us a voice we can be heard with. BASP is pleased to hear from any sanctuaries and will gladly discuss your becoming part of the group.
FUNDRAISING
Our fundraising comes from near and far.
We are supported locally by Countrywide Stores who give prizes for our raffles and open day competitions. The Galloping Gourmet at Marden support EMW Sanctuaries as does the Bitless Bridle Company, SBS saddles, and N.Wildig & Sons of Thornbury, Bromyard are our very generous suppliers of straw and shortfall hay, and Bromyard Tyres answer the call without fail when our very old vehicle decides to take a day off!
EMW Sanctuaries are supported nationally by those who visit our website http://www.equinemarketwatch.org.uk and also by the members of Saddle-Up website http://www.saddle-up.org/forums
EMW achieved charitable status in June 2006 (No 1114700) and you can visit our fundraiser page on the website for events or go to our giftshop for items such as our calendar, clocks & keyrings.
EMW Sanctuaries are open to ALL animals in need, not just equines as both are registered smallholdings.
EMW-UK actively campaigns against indiscriminate breeding of valueless foals whose average life span is a scant miserable 6 months.

EMW Tanna who lived out his final, happy, peaceful years at EMW Herefordshire and sadly passed away this year at the grand age of 44 and is, rather fittingly, the cover subject for EMW’s 2010 Calendar (on sale now, see EMW’s website for details of how to buy & other fundraising events) |
