“Where can I ride?” A guide to rights of way
Do you know the difference between Footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways and Byways open to all traffic (B.O.A.T.)?
There are four main types of public rights of way:-
Footpath
Footpaths are for use on foot only. Walkers are entitled to take a pushchair or other ‘normal’ accompaniment . A dog can also be taken on a footpath, but must be under ‘close control’.
Bridleways
As for footpaths, but with additional rights to ride or lead a horse, and to ride or push a cycle (with pedals).
Restricted Byway
A new category of right of way, formerly known as a Road Used a Public Path (R.U.P.P.). The rights are the same as for bridleways, with an additional right to use horse-drawn carts and carriages, but not motorised vehicles.
Byway open to all traffic (B.O.A.T.)
As for bridleways, but with additional rights to drive motorised vehicles, and horse-drawn carts and carriages.
How do I know where Public Rights of Way are?
For general information on public rights of way you can look at Ordnance Survey “Explorer” maps however they do not show the definitive legal line and status of routes. If you require accurate information on the precise line and status of a route, then you should inspect the Definitive Map.
How can I find more information for my area?

BHS Cross Country
This exciting competition offers grass-roots riders the chance to qualify to compete at the National Final, through a series of qualifying events.
Qualifiers are incorporated into classes at existing cross country or Hunter Trials events all over the country cumulating in the National Championships in late September.
There are a number of qualifiers held throughout the UK allowing competitors to qualify for Novice, Pairs and Open classes at the BHS Cross Country Championship.

Horse Agility – The new sport for all

Horse agility is a new equestrian sport that is growing rapidly in popularity because people who love horses have found that they can now compete at the highest levels without having to ride.
In this fast and exciting sport the horse has to overcome a number of challenging obstacles, sometimes against the clock, being guided by a handler who moves along with him. The speed, drama, tension and excitement of the competition make this a great spectator sport.
Horse Agility tests the horse’s physical as well as his emotional fitness and tests the handler’s ability as a trainer to keep the horse travelling safely over the course effectively and with style.
The sport is great for people who can’t or don’t want to ride, disabled people who are unable to ride but can move alongside a horse as it completes the obstacle course, horses that are unable to be ridden for behavioural or physical reasons and ponies that are too small for an adult rider. It gives everyone the chance to compete without having to ride or spend hours preparing their horse for non-ridden showing classes.
In short Horse Agility offers riding and non-riding horse lovers a completely new way of being involved in a competitive equestrian sport that is active and exciting which has never been available to them before..
As safety is a very large part of the training for Horse Agility the skills learnt in training make everyday handling of horses easy for everyone and helps the horse to build a more confident, trusting relationship with his handlers.
Often there seems no option but to ride a horse to keep him physically and emotionally fit but the horses that are presently in training for Horse Agility Competitions are exhibiting a calm outlook and are more becoming physically able without lunging, long reining or being put onto horse walkers which are often the only choice left to people.
The problem solving required to complete the obstacles keeps the horse’s mind working constructively and is a lot of fun for the handlers as they find ways to help the horse understand the request.
Obstacles comprise simple bending poles and crossing tarpaulins to tunnels, seesaws and A – frames just as in dog agility but with bigger obstacles!
Because of the levels structure of the competitions there is always a new skill to learn and improve and at the higher levels horses compete within an arena at liberty without a lead rope. The top level athletes can then move onto Wild Agility in which horse and handler travel at least 5km across country against the clock completing a number of natural obstacles along the way.
People are finding that the Horse Agility competitions and training days, with the emphasis on having fun, are a great way to meet like minded people who think the same way about their horse’s potential other than as a ridden horse.
All horses and ponies can join in Horse Agility whether they are ridden or not in other competitions, they just need to be in good physical condition.
Everyone can join in – children and adults of all ages and ability, the people do the horse training the horse does most of the energetic bit!

Ragwort
Horses die a painful death if poisoned by ragwort. You’ve seen the plant – it has a yellow ‘flower’ on a long green stem and is often seen in abundance on the side of roads, but is it also in your paddocks! If so, you need to pull it up straight away! Read on….

“Good general pasture management plays an important role in controlling Ragwort as it can prevent the formation of bare patches in the sward that enable Ragwort to establish itself. Pasture should not be over-grazed and thus stocking densities should be closely monitored. Poaching of the land is to be avoided, which may necessitate resting pasture particularly in wet conditions. It is also imperative to remove droppings and any stale forage such as hay.
Where Ragwort is present, its removal should take place before it has had the opportunity to seed. Each plant can produce many thousands of seeds, so to minimise the problems caused by Ragwort in the following season, early removal is advisable. Livery Yard Agreement
Hereford Equestrian recommends that horse owners take advantage of the British Horse Society Livery Yard Agreement Form, available free of charge as a download from the BHS website. Livery yards are not required to hold a license, which means virtually anyone with stables and land can offer livery. Whilst the majority will offer a good if not excellent standard of care, there may be some which are inadequate. Make sure the livery yard has the facilities you require and that there is an obvious good standard of care and welfare of the horses at the yard.

Pony Clubs are for children with their own ponies. PC’s provide a great opportunity for youngsters to get a good education on horseback as well as in horsecare. There is also a very good competition structure within the Pony Club, starting with local PC competitions, leading on to Area Competitions and for some, the Pony Club championships. Many, if not most of today’s top British International riders started their riding career in the Pony Club.

BHS (British Horse Society) TREC is an exciting equestrian competition that has something to offer every horse and rider. This friendly sport is a great way to give confidence to both you and your horse, while having fun.
BHS TREC requires the horse and rider to show versatility and training, combining the demands of trail riding (orienteering), with jumping and correct basic flatwork.

If you fancy giving BHS TREC a go, there are TREC clubs listed on the BHS website which offer training and advice. There is also a step by step guide on what you will expect when competing at BHS TREC Competitions.
BHS TREC appeals to all sorts of riders, with all sorts of horses. Basically, if you enjoy riding in attractive countryside, with a reasonable amount of challenge and a competitive element, you’ll enjoy BHS TREC. It has many attractions and advantages over other forms of equestrian competitive sport.
1. It’s fun – and you can push yourself as hard as you like, or take it easy and enjoy it.
2. It’s inexpensive – and will be even less expensive as the number of events increases and there are more opportunities closer to home.
3. It doesn’t require high quality horses, expensive clothes and tack – or a high level of fitness (of horse or rider) – to enjoy BHS TREC and to do well.4. You can compete in pairs – with a friend, a partner, or a child.
Each event uses local natural ‘hazards’ to test horses and riders.
What’s Involved?
The usual event consists of three parts: (they are not always held in this order)
Phase 1 – POR – is basically orienteering on horseback. ou start with a map and a record card and must find your way around the course, via a number of checkpoints, at pre-determined speeds. It is not a race, and the majority of the course (usually between 12 and 0 kms at the novice levels) is in walk and trot.
Phase 2 – Gaits – this phase is designed to demonstrate that the rider can exercise a degree of influence over the horse first in canter, then in walk, on a straight line course – usually 150 metres long and 2-2.2 metres wide. The concept is that the slower the horse travels in canter, and the faster in walk, the greater the marks awarded.
Phase 3 – the cross-country phase. Even at Championship level, the size of the jumps remains reasonable (2 ft. at the most novice level to a maximum of about 3ft 3 in. at Championship level, with a maximum length of about 5 km.) It also includes some exercises, mounted and dismounted, designed to test the horse/rider’s suitability to cope with the obstacles and difficulties that might be encountered whilst riding n the countryside.
Trec origins:
- The sport of BHS TREC (Techniques de Randonnee Equestre de Competition) was brought to the UK by The British Horse Society in 1998.
- TREC originates in France and was developed nearly 30 years ago as a way to train and assess the competence and ability of professional horse riding guides.
- The British Horse Society is the governing body for the sport in the UK.

A brief introduction to Endurance Riding
Endurance GB is the governing body for the sport of Endurance (Competitive Long Distance) Riding in Great Britain. It formulates the rules and organises rides to cater for all levels of ability, whether you want to compete occasionally at local events or are aiming for top class/international competition. They provide over 100 events a year for members as well as many social and pleasure rides, to encourage non-members.
There are competitive rides held in every part of the country from spring to late autumn and local events throughout the year, as well as a comprehensive training and information sharing programme. Types of rides:

2011 sees the arrival of a new stallion at stud in Herefordshire:
Aeroplane. An Irish bred thoroughbred, he resides in Ullingswick, approximately 10 miles north of the city. Owned by Vici and Richard Morse, every care will be taken to ensure he can make his mark in both the racing and sport horse worlds.
Standing at exactly 16hh he has very correct conformation, being of a strong compact type. His movement is almost as good as his temperament. When in pre – training he was exercised by a 13yo girl, and is stabled alongside mares. He likes nothing better than to go out in the field all day with geldings, and to occasionally play with his favourite dog friend.
Aeroplane’s race career spanned 5 seasons, yielding 6 wins. He was placed 11 times, several of these in Listed races. Although all of his wins were over 6f, he was often placed over 5f and a mile – confirming he had both speed and stamina.
Aeroplane’s sire Danehill Dancer needs no introduction. From the Danzig/Danehill line, one of the most influential of modern times, he is already proving to be a notable sire of sires.
Aeroplane’s dam is a winning sister to 9 individual winners, with 3 of those being consistently successful in pattern races on the flat. One is a multiple winning hurdler, confirming the hint of stamina in the pedigree. Another is the dam of Bachir, winner of the Irish 2000 guineas and now a notable sire for Godolphin, and also Albuhera, a prolific hurdler.
Priced very competitively, even in the current economic climate, he is sure to be popular in many spheres of the equine community. His speed and stamina should complement almost any type of racing broodmare. His looks, movement, and temperament make him a potentially great cross onto a native, arab, or warmblood to produce future eventers and show horses.
