Solihull Riding School, Solihull, West Midlands played host to the many horseball teams that had travelled from across the country to take part in the two day competitions.
The sport which is like a combination of Polo, Rugby and Basketball played on horseback,is based on the Argentina's game Pato. Originated in Argentina in the early 1700 (national sport of Argentina) . Horseball is one of the ten disciplines officially recognised by the International Federation on Equestrian Sports.
Horseball is played all over the world in 15 different countries spread over 4 continents.

What is Horseball?
Some 20 years
ago the French Equestrian Federation (FEI) were looking for something
to develop riding skills that could be used in a ManÈge, would
be fun to do and easy to learn.
Jean Paul Depons, a riding instructor and a rugby player came up with
the concept of HORSEBALL which despite it's English name was invented
at Castillion near Bordeaux.
Horseball has become an integral part of the riding instruction in France,
and the federation is energetically promoting it at home and, more recently,
abroad. The country now boasts some 450 horseball clubs, which compete in national
and regional leagues. France has won the European Cup on each of the occasions
it has been contested so far, including this year.
Elsewhere, progress has been slower, although it is now gathering pace. Portugal
and Belgium have the strongest teams after the French and the most players.
The game has grown in England during the last five years since the French introduced
it in an exhibition tournament at the Horse of the Year Show in 1990 and it
is also starting to win converts outside Europe, including Australia, parts
of the Middle East and the Americas.
The game has been continually developed in England and has grown since 1990.
The game has now been recognised by the International Equestrian Federation
(FEI), which is considering including it as a core discipline. Leading horseballers
reckon this could pave the way for eventual Olympic recognition.

Horseball riders from the Forest of Deans Newnham on Severn Horseball teams have again been preparing for another season of the sport HORSEBALL.
The sport has been building in popularity over the last few years and is now a recognised equestrian discipline competing along side show jumping and dressage and is frequently in the public eye.
This highly spectacular game has been compared to a cross between Rugby and Netball. A fast and exciting team sport which is played on horse back. There are two halves, each of 10 Min's,with half time of 3 Min's.The game is umpired by 2 referees, one on horseback and the other on a chair at the side of the pitch. Each team composed of 6 riders(who can be of either sex) and horses. Only 4 from each team are allowed on the field at the same time but substitutions are allowed during the match. The arena measures 70 metres by 30 metres. Played with a junior sized football inside of a leather harness with 6 handles attached. The aim of the game to is to win the ball. The team scoring the greatest number of goals win the match. The ball has to be picked up from the ground - make a minimum of 3 consecutive passes of the ball between at least 3 of the 4 team members, then thrown through a hoop 3 mtrs high to score a goal, whilst the opposition can defend and intercept passes. No player can hold the ball for more than ten seconds. The sport is extremely exhilarating and fantastic to watch, as the horses move at great speeds with riders having to tackle and reach for the ball on the ground without being able to dismount. Although play can be very fast, expert control is essential. At its highest level- players canter and perform pirouettes and athletic ball skills that leave the audience breathless. At a more sedate level-seniors and juniors (as young as 8 and as old as 60) find the game improves balance, confidence and co-ordination,so much so that riding schools and University rider clubs in the area are taking it up to provide some fun as an alternative to weekly lessons.
The League season starts in April and is played monthly through to September with the Open Championships held in October.
The Forest of Dean (Gloucestershires) local team is Newnham- on-Severn who field 4 sides.

The first Horseball League week-end took place last week-end with over 20 teams and over 80 players from the North,South,East and West of the country assembling at Bromyard Equestrian Centre in Hereford.
All the horses and ponies have to be presented for vetting and tack inspection at each league week-end on both days,to check that they are fit and sound and safe to play. Newnham teams were delighted last week-end when all the horses and ponies passed with flying colours,a tribute to the Newnham teams resulting from pre-season fittening that both horse and rider has to undergo.
