The British Horse Society, in conjunction with the British Equestrian Federation’s Welfare Group, has launched a voluntary code of practice to set out acceptable welfare standards for horses at shows and events. The Code was devised as a result of the number of concerns reported to the BHS Welfare Department regarding the treatment of horses at shows, and feedback from show organisers who often feel unable to act when welfare breaches are reported to them. Sykdivers Peter Jones ( other half of EMW Trustee Amy ) and Daley Wear (Amy's cousin) are going to be doing a

The tandem is arguably the best way to experience their first freefall!

They are then securely attached to an experienced tandem instructor with a 4 point harness system, and board the aircraft.
The aircraft will normally climb to around 10 000 to 12 000 feet where they will exit and begin to freefall.
They will reach speeds of approximately 120 miles per hour.
The freefall ends at around 5 000 feet when the tandem instructor will deploy the main parachute and they begin
their descent under canopy.
This will last between 4 to 6 minutes as they will fly towards the landing area.
There will be have professional cameramen available to capture the moment !!!!
The time and date of the jump will depend on weather and the number of jumpers attending the course.
Spectators and supporter to hold my hand are welcome, at the moment they plan to do the jump from
Whitchurch, Shropshire on a Fri and Sat.

Size did not matter for Herefordshire's Maddy Jacob at the BHS TREC Scottish Championships.
Maddy proved bigger isn’t necessarily better by riding one of the smallest competing ponies to take the Level 4 Individual title at the 2008 BHS TREC Scottish Championships.
Maddy and her 13.1hh Welsh Section C, Taffechan Princess, fought off competition from the likes of former World Champion David Hay-Thorburn to win the highest competition level in BHS TREC.
Maddy said: "I was thrilled with Scotland! It certainly made the miles home much easier. It was a good one for Taffie as the going was favourable for her. She had an adventurous time in Scotland - I did fear on Friday that we had overdone it but she was fine for the vet and A1 at the start. She had been attacked by mad Highland ponies on Wednesday (they pack a serious punch) and gone belly deep in a bog on Thursday. Still, you can't wrap ponies in cotton wool even if they are competing in championships!" Read more here.

Well done Louise for a great result at Bramham 3* three day event. 12th after dressage, and 2nd after XC, no doubt Louise was disappointed to have 2 fences down in the show jumping, but that is the nature of the sport. Latest info on the suspicious men below:
Tues 10 June - They can't have been caught as I have received this:
Yesterday Frank Lane a local farmer went to feed his cows and saw a man taking photographs of some horses just passed the church in Welsh Newton,
A man looked suspicious of Frank watching him and instead of walking back to his car along the road the (quickest way) he went out of his way and went through the church yard to get back to his car.
Frank is not sure what make the car is but the registration number is V858KDW and he thinks its a navy fiat, he described the man as in his 40's with close cut dark hair and wearing a green and red jacket.
Im a little concerned as I live on Welsh Newton Common and I have several horses and alot of people keep horses there too.
The owner of the horses photographed rang the police and they didnt seem to want to know, they just logged a complaint. Is there anything else we can do?
The thieves were spotted on Wednesday, at Bitterly, near Ludlow, taking photos of horses and near Brecon (White Transit Van) Thursday evening.
More updates of the people photographing horses and acting suspiciously are coming in all the time.
The Police have just phoned us to update us after their investigations into a report of men and the N reg white van and red four wheel drive (land cruiser/land rover has been mentioned) photographing horses in LLanishen yesterday.
The owners gave chase to the vehicle but could not get the registration and unfortunately they got away.
The Police have just told us that yellow arrows have been marked on the road to the horses in Llanishen.
Also, last night Caldicot Police were given reports of a van fitting the description acting suspiciously in the Tintern St Arvans area.
The Police have passed it on to intelligence to see if it has any links to a number of horse thefts. They seem to be taking it very seriously.

The return of Amersham Horses
You may or may not be aware of the recent court ruling which has decreed that 29 of the equines rescued from Spindles Farm in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, must be returned to the Gray family, four members of which are awaiting trial on offences under the Animal Welfare Act (2006). A further 82 horses must be removed from the sanctuaries where they are currently housed, to be sold at public auction on May 3rd.
Obviously this ruling defies any logic and, while it will be hard to overturn, we are asking you to do what you can. To this end can you please take a couple of minutes to add your name to the online petition which has been organised by the National Equine Welfare Council Click here to sign the petition

Major Breakthrough is announced in Battle Against Strangles
A new diagnostic blood test has been developed to combat the virulent horse disease Strangles.
The breakthrough has come after four years of research by scientists at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket.
The development of the test is part of the campaign ‘Breaking the Strangles Hold’, launched by the Animal Health Trust and The British Horse Society in February last year by the AHT’s President HRH The Princess Royal.
It has two main aims: to raise awareness among owners, riders and anyone involved in the health and welfare of horses, and to generate funds to support the vital research in the ongoing battle to eradicate the disease.
The blood test identifies horses that have recently been exposed to Strangles, enabling it to be nipped in the bud.
Oliver Wilson, campaign director at The British Horse Society, said: "It is fantastic news. This big breakthrough is a real boon to horse owners and I believe will lead to a significant drop in Strangles outbreaks. But there is still much to be done.
"The AHT's work to develop and test a fully effective vaccine against Strangles is ongoing. To support it we need to raise another £120,000 by the end of this year to reach the campaign target of £250,000."
The Horse Trust's Chief Executive Brigadier Paul Jepson said: “We are delighted our funding for this project has been so fruitful. This represents major progress in our battle to reduce the suffering caused by this common and debilitating disease.”
Peter Webbon, Chief Executive of the Animal Health Trust, said: “Our re |
