Brilliant Burton does it again

Christopher Burton followed up his third consecutive CIC3* win at the NAF Hartpury International Horse Trials with victory on the final day in this morning’s CCI1* event.

The Australian, who claimed top spot in the festival’s centrepiece event yesterday, led throughout the competition in the 1* before a clear round on Santano II in Sunday’s show jumping gave him his second top spot of the weekend with a score of 35.7.

New Zealand’s Lucy Jackson provided the clearest competition to Burton pushing him all the way to the final round after jumping clear shortly before Burton took centre stage. Sitting second overnight on a score of 37.8, Jackson, riding Corozon, rode a clear round to put the pressure on before Burton achieved the same feat to claim his second win in as many days.

Nicolas Touzaint of France finished third riding Tzinga d’Auzay as another clear round gave him a score of 40.4 overall and ensured that the top three riders stayed as they were following Saturday’s cross country results.

In the day’s other competition, the CCI2*, overnight leader Jonathan Paget – riding last – clipped a pole to finish on 47.2 in third place behind Brook Staples (47.1) and Matthew Wright, who claimed top spot with a final score of 45.2 riding Mrs Jane Philpot’s Shannondale Shinawil.

Hartpury’s Director of Equine, Rosie Scott-Ward, said “this has been an outstanding display of world class eventing right across the whole week. Everyone involved in the horse trials has worked incredibly hard to pull off one of the biggest events on our equine calendar. We hope that all the spectators and competitors all had a great time and we cannot wait to welcome them back next year.”

Due to a Met Office weather warning the team at Hartpury worked incredibly hard to move all outdoor activities indside, with both classes originally set to be taking place in the outdoor arenas.

Hartpury would like to thank NAF, all the sponsors and everyone involved in putting on such a hugely successful international event.
