The sad news was announced on July 27th 2012 that Northern Racing are to close Hereford Racecourse at the end of the 2012 season. The reasoning behind this appears to be that the owners of the land, Herefordshire Council, have not been willing to discuss extending the current lease, which has 17 years to run, which would allow the company to invest in the course to make it a viable proposition.

There has been thoroughbred horseracing in the city of Hereford since 1771.

With an inactive building site already in the city (the fabled Edgar Street Grid), the closure of the course would rip more of the heart out of a historic city, with a council with no plans visible, and possibly no ideas as to what to do with the land; and would take much-needed money out of the economy of Herefordshire.

We ask the owners of the land, Herefordshire Council, to:

1 – Disclose the current plans for proposed usage of the land that comprises Hereford Racecourse if it were to close.

2 – Think again about allowing the course to close and to agree a longer-term lease with interested parties allow investment and the continuation of the historic tradition of thoroughbred horseracing in the city of Hereford.
