The
Herefordshire Driving for the disabled group meets every Thursday at
Sellack House. Below is a report from the British Driving society show
held at Smiths Lawn Windsor, where we took one of our drivers Nick
Jones in June 2005:
Nick Jones from the Herefordshire RDA Driving Group at Sellack, won a fourth place in the single turnout driven by a disabled whip at the BDS show at Smiths Lawn Windsor. Nick, who won first place at the Hereford District Driving Group show in May with his own horse, was driving The Hon Mrs Bridget Smiths RDA pony Jack to a Bennington Fun Bug, this caused much comment and a number of groups expressed interest in the bug as a disabled driving vehicle. Certainly Jack enjoyed it and behaved impeccably, giving a very competent individual show ably assisted as usual by Nick. Although it was an exceedingly hot day there were eight competitors in Nick’s class. Entries in other classes from the Herefordshire area also did well The Hon Mrs Smith took third in the Mountain and Moorland class with her much ribboned Highland pony Harray of Forglen (Harry) who although finding the heat a bit much (being more used to the snow and rain of his native land) performed really well and gave his wilting whip and groom a lovely drive through Windsor Great Park as part of the Concours in the afternoon. Lester Dagge was in the ribbons again coming fourth in his class and also doing the drive in the steamy heat in the afternoon with little April keeping up with the bigger ponies and horses with ease. A drive past Prince Phillip finished off the day, a wonderful parade of horses, ponies and donkeys driven to a wide variety of vehicles.
We
are always looking for fit able bodied helpers. Men would be particularly
welcome as we are hoping to start to take wheelchair uses next term and
help with loading and unloading would be very gratefully received.
