Hunter Type

Question:

Hi,

I’ve owned my 8yr old IDx gelding for just over 2 years now and I’d really like to know more about showing and what class/classes you think we should look to do.

I’ve no experience in this area but really would like to give it ago. Any help/suggestions as to what is expected in showing of each class and of horse and rider would be very helpful.

Many thanks
Jennie

Answer from Claire Oliver:

“From the picture your horse is of hunter type and would be suitable for local showing in ridden hunter classes.  From the schedule you could have  a novice hunter class not to have won a previous first prize, or open hunter.  Or if he has any jumping ability or schooling over rustic poles a working hunter class.  Some shows have a class for riding club horses where a small jump and an individual walk, trot and figure of eight is required.

Your horse has to have a plaited mane and pulled or plaited tail.  Also other parts of his head and heals evenly trimmed.  He could be shown in a snaffle or double reined bridle ie  Pelham etc.  You would need to be neatly turned out ie tweed coat, long boots and head-wear and plain stick.

He would need to be schooled to walk, trot, canter , gallop and figure of eight. Also to be taught to walk and trot in hand in front of the judge.”

Further note from the editor. Jennie I would suggest that you follow Claire’s advice and go and watch a show with the above classes so that you can see how the class is run, the judging procedure, what people wear and how they turnout their horse’s. That way you will be prepared for your first show. Good luck!
