Trailblazers competitions include show jumping, dressage, showing, working hunter and combined training and there are classes for both senior and junior riders. For dressage, show jumping and combined training, qualification consists of a first and then second rounds. Competitors in first round classes need to achieve the minimum specified level for the different disciplines.  In dressage that means gaining a score of 58% or more, show jumping a double clear, and combined training to be placed in the top 5. Successful competitors are awarded with a qualification pack and can then progress to the second rounds by purchasing a second round qualification card, costing £12.  Second rounds run from March to mid-May and competitors can enter as many second round competitions as they wish at the level they have qualified to try and secure their place at the SEIB Trailblazers Championship Finals held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

In Showing & Working Hunter classes, competitors qualify directly for the SEIB Trailblazers Championship Finals if placed in the top 4 at a qualifier. Once a competitor has qualified they will be required to purchase a qualification card, this will then enable them to enter any showing or working hunter class at the SEIB Trailblazers Championships for which they are eligible. The 2017 Championships will see the introduction of new showing classes such as the Trailblazers Re-Trained Race Horse Championships, In Hand and Ridden Spotted, Appaloosa, Palomino & Roan Championship, In Hand and Ridden Best Foreign Breed Championship, Trailblazers Riding Horse Championship, Trailblazers Ridden Novice Cob Championship, Trailblazers Ridden Open Cob Championship and the Trailblazers Ridden Show Hunter under 148cm Championship.
