Herefordshire based Whittal Seeds grass seed catalogue has three exclusive mixtures for the equestrian sector. The comprehensive free catalogue is available to farmers, horticulturalists and those related to equestrian across the Midlands and Wales.
New and improved
Whittal Seeds is an independent farmer owned and managed business specialising in the production and retailing of grass seed. The catalogue includes agricultural, equestrian and amenity grass seed mixtures – as well as cereal seeds, forage crops, green manure and cover crops. There are three horse and pony mixtures within the catalogue, including Hay and Haylage Mix, Monnow and Laminitics Mix. All three mixtures are suitable for horse, pony and general paddocks and the varieties within each mixture are designed to improve the health and wellbeing of the horse – with flexibility to sow at a rate suitable for paddock conditions.
Hay and Haylage Mix
Where grazing and hay or haylage are required the agricultural perennial within this mixture produces the bulk needed for a good crop as a 2 year ley.
This is a very durable and quick establishing mixture enabling an extended grazing season with excellent resistance to poaching. It’s suitable for grazing throughout the year.
This specialist mixture reduces the risk of laminitis by not creating bulk grass from high sugar ryegrasses and instead providing a palatable blend of fescues and timothy.
Knowledge from the ‘grassroots’
Whittal Seeds, led by 3rd generation farmer, Philip Whittal, is located west of Hereford at Bowling Green Farm. Since 1935 the Whittal family have been growing grass seed and recent investment in a seed processing and packaging plant saw the business venture into direct retailing to farm and equestrian sectors in 2011. Since then, the business has established a wealth of customers across Herefordshire and the surrounding counties. By overseeing the complete production process from seed growing, harvesting to blending and finally bagging – Whittal Seeds has control of every stage of the process to guarantee a high level of quality and service.
Philip Whittal, Managing Director of Whittal Seeds, comments; “Grassland is an important element of livestock farming and for livery yards – and I am a big advocate of the saying that ‘you get out what you put in’. Working with Whittal Seeds, we can develop the right grass seed for you, taking into consideration your system, land and objectives to ensure that we can advise on the best seed to deliver the most productive results. Grazed grass is one of the most cost effective forms of feed; therefore a well thought out re-seeding programme is key at this time. Our new seed catalogue includes a variety of grass seed mixtures to suit a diverse range of uses, soil types and topography – as well as cereal seeds, forage, and root crops, green manure and cover crops.
