Racing Returns To Its Roots At Brampton Bryan This Sunday (24th)
After the euphoria of a local point-to-pointer winning at the Cheltenham Festival last week, racing returns to its roots this Sunday (24th) at Brampton Bryan. Indeed, Phillip Rowley, who sent out Hazel Hill to win the St James Park Cheltenham Foxhunters in such style under Alex Edwards, has several entries on the 6 race-card.
Organized by the Teme Valley Hunt and United Pack, this meeting is always popular, and the riverside course has attracted 106 entries.
There will be a highly competitive Maiden for Mares & Fillies only, sponsored by The Jockey Club, which will be followed by an Open Maiden for Male horses, which has been sponsored as a memorial by the family and friends of Lucy Birley, who so loved Brampton Bryan. It is hoped that many friends will come along to make the Memorial race a very special and emotional occasion.
Tim Bevan, the new clerk of the course at Brampton Bryan has made some changes to the layout of the paddock, tents etc and is hopeful that it will improve the experience for all concerned.
There will be two fully-subscribed Pony Races before the point-to-point, the first of which is due off at 12.30 pm. Runners come from all over the country to contest these races, capably organized by the secretary Pauline Duggan, despite the fact that she has recently had serious hip surgery.
The forecast for Sunday is looking very promising, and an afternoon amid the spectacular scenery of the Herefordshire/Shropshire borders, with six busy races is not to be missed.
The course (SY7 0JH) can be found on the A4113 between Leintwardine and Knighton, 9 miles north-west of Ludlow.
Entrance to the course is £10 per person, under 16’s and car parking free.
