The number of horses in the RSPCA has doubled over the past year. We have almost 600 ponies and horses in our care – a 204% increase on March 2011. This costs approx £3.25 million a year to simply care for these horses, before paying any vet costs.
In 2010 the RSPCA gave out horse welfare advice about 41 times a week, it rose to about 42 times a week in 2011, so far this year its risen to 49 times a week.
In 2010 and 2011 we had about 13 complaints regarding abandoned horses a week, so far this year it’s risen to 18 complaints a week.
In 2010 we found new homes for 156 horses, in 2011 we rehomed 240 horses. It costs the RSPCA approx £5000 to care for, rehabilitate and rehome each horse in our care.
Due to the overwhelming demand on the RSPCA funds, staff at Gonsal Farm Equine Welfare and Rehabilitation Centre are working hard to raise as much money as possible to help with the ever growing demand on funds at the Rspca.
Staff are organising a tack sale and have also been in training for a half marathon which will be held on 9th Sept.
